Getting Started in the RPG: Tutorial

Getting Started: Tutorial

Where do I start? How can I get there?

Creating your character. This is a simple process. Once you click the RPG button on our banner or on the vBulletin links, you will be prompted to create a name and choose an avatar. I recommend using either the Soldier01 avatar (male) or the Soldier02 avatar (female), but you are welcome to use whichever you like or upload your own.

Please note that, in the world of Twilight, there are no classes. You have the freedom to create and develop the character you want.

Going to your first location. After you have submitted your character, you will be able to access two options which will help you with the next step.

I recommend using your "World Map" option, as this will eventually become your primary means of transportation. You will need to find the Ardent Shores at the very Southwest corner of the world. Once you have clicked this location, use the "travel" option.

Alternatively, you will often need to access a place that cannot be seen on the World Map. This will happen most often if you log in or out outside of a city. To do this, click "Scan Yourself." Under the option, "Last Seen In," will be a link to your location. For now, you can use this to travel directly to Ardent Shores.

Speaking with the soldier. All NPCs are talked to through a small window at the lower right hand side of the location page; either double click the name or highlight it and click 'Interact.' Continue through the conversation with this man to get an idea for how quests and NPC's work.

Special Note -- You must speak with "Well-Armored Soldier" for the story to begin. If you have not done this, return to Ardent Shores immediately.

Checking your Quest Log. Once you are done speaking with this soldier, check your Quest Log to make sure you have the quest. This quest log is written in first person and will sometimes have story information not found in the NPC's chat.

Items, Spells & Attacks

Purchasing & Equipping Items, Attacks, and Spells in Ardent Stone. Once you are in Ardent and have received some money by talking to Captain Atrian, immediately talk to Armorer Albo. He will give you a set of equipment. Then, I suggest learning to use buildings.

Purchasing & Equipping Armor/Weapons:
  • On the upper right hand of your screen, go to Available Places. Scroll down until you see "Whitestone Armory." Double click or highlight and click 'Visit.'
  • In the chat options, ask the sentry, "Do you have any items?"
  • Scroll down the list. See what interests you. The first set of items is relatively inexpensive and is designed for your level range. The second set, however, is very expensive and is designed for much later levels. I would recommend not purchasing any items for the time being.
  • Now, let's worry about the items Armorer Albo gave you. Look below your Health, Chakra, and Experience bars for an option, 'Equip Character.' Click it. Use the drop-down menus to equip your character, then click 'Update Character Equipment.'

  • You are now ready to fight!
Purchasing & Equipping Jutsus:
  • In Twilight, simply purchasing a Jutsu does not equip it; as a character, you are only allowed to use a certain number of Jutsus for any given battle. As a result, you will need to choose and equip the ones you want.
  • Ardent Stone only has one place to learn new Jutusus; this is found in the Fighting Halls. Head there and you will be able to check out the available spells. I suggest purchasing just one Jutsu, either a healing technique or Fiery Palm.
  • Once you have purchased the Jutsu, go to the bar beneath your Health, Chakra, and Experience bar and choose 'My Inventory.' Use the drop-down menu to find Jutsu. Open it, then equip the techniques you have purchased.

  • You will noticed that the Jutsus have experience bars and levels. These will level up strictly through use.
Purchasing Attack Types:
  • This is a simple enough process. To purchase an attack type, go to the Barracks like you would for a spell. Here, you will be able to learn a small number of special attacks your character can use.
  • Special Attacks carry personal modifiers and strictly deal damage. For instance, an attack might double or triple your damage output, but take an enormous penalty to your armor... or even health.
  • Special Attacks are used in combat through a system similar to Overdrives in Final Fantasy, or Rage in World of Warcraft. You build towards them.
  • Special Attacks gain experience, like spells, but not levels. When you first learn an Attack Type, you will rarely succeed at it. However, with use practice comes perfection, and a maximum Compatibility Rating it will be an integral part of your character. Compatibility Rating is found under 'My Inventory' in the drop-down entry for 'Attack Types.'
Available Places, Other Buildings and Outside Areas
There are several buildings and locations you will find inside a given area. These are:
  • Pet Shops. Pet shops allow you to purchase a pet (presuming your Taming skill is high enough); this pet will act as another player in your party, and may be able to learn special tools and abilities.
  • Triple Triad, Component, and other shops. There are plenty of shops for purchasing crafting items, components, tools, and Triple Triad cards. To learn more about Triple Triad, check out the guide relating to that.
  • Foundries. Foundries are where all metal layering is applied to weapons and armor; it is also where magical enchantments must be applied. Please bear in mind that certain layers and enchants can only be applied in special foundries.
  • Inns. This applies to any location where you can recover your health and mana, usually for a great price. Inns located in dangerous areas or in the wilderness often have much steeper prices.
  • Banks. As their name suggests, these are financial institutions with various account securities and interest options. Banks are ideal places to put Shardsilver, as they are protected from the normal penalty you would receive when losing a battle. Each bank offers a varying services, so check with them. Beware, banks can be robbed by other players, and if they are successful you will lose unsecured money.

Battles & Triple Triad Battles:
  • You can view battles in progress in a given area by following Battles or TT Battles in Available Places. This can be an interesting way of seeing what local creatures are capable of, or other players.
  • To set up a Battle, use the Battle Requests option below your Health, Mana, and Experience bars.

Outside Places:
  • Oftentimes, you will need to use Available Places to head to local combat zones or to follow paths deep into the wilderness. Options listed in "Outside Area" are rarely visible on the World Map unless you are already in the zone.
  • Visiting an Outside Place will prompt you to use a travel service. Most of the time you will wish to use 'Walk,' or it may be the only option available. However, for increased safety, a travel service may be used. In rare cases, travel services will be required to access some locations.

Combat

To progress, like any good game, your next goal is to fight stuff. Spiders, in this case. Though you may want to read more in the Stats guide, here are the basics. Start by heading to Ardent Ledges.

Encounters can with enemies can occur in any of the following ways:
  • Upon entering or leaving a zone, you may encounter enemies. This chance is determined by the Travel Service you use.
  • If there is an Elite creature in a zone you are traveling to, you will encounter that creature under any circumstance upon entry. If there are two Elites in a zone, you will encounter both. Elites can only be encountered a single time and will never engage you again once defeated.
  • You may hunt for nearby creatures by using the 'Creatures In The Area' section of your right-hand bar. Please note that this is not determined by what you have selected; hunting creatures is a random selection based on the population of such creatures in the area.
In some cases, you may wish to scan an enemy before fighting it. Scanning enemies may show obvious weaknesses the creature has, as well as general stats and recorded drops of that creature. Note that Elite creatures can be scanned from any neighboring zone, allowing you to judge the stats of the creature before you are forced to fight it. To scan a creature, highlight it's name under 'Creatures In The Area' and hit 'Scan.'

Now, to fight your first enemy. If combat didn't automatically start when you traveled to Ardent Ledges, go ahead and start hunting.

Your first battle will be with a spider, no doubt. Here's what you'll need to know:
  • First, consider the weaknesses of the creature you are fighting. If you forget to scan a creature, or are not able to before you are put into combat, try to think of any logical physical weaknesses the creature might have. In the case of spiders, the weakness is very logical -- they will become less functional if you attack them in their legs.
  • Second, if there are multiple creatures, figure out which one should be attacked first. Usually if you fight two of the same creatures this will be fairly obvious -- hit whichever you have targeted. However, if you are fighting distinct creatures, such as one with low health but heavy magick and one with high health and medium physical damage, it might be most efficient to kill the magick creature.
  • If using melee weapons, set up your weapons and attacks. In starting, you will want to make sure you are using both Ardent Maces, attacking the legs. You will have to set these at the beginning of every fight, but the settings will remain for the duration of the fight unless you change them.
  • If using Jutsus, be absolutely sure you pick the right target. I've seen a player use a heal on himself, then the next turn he attacked himself with Fiery Palm because he did not change targets. Also, never assume a Jutsu is automatically going to target the enemy; I have accidentally used Fiery Palm on the same player because I forgot to target a spider.
  • ??
  • Collect Loot.
Combat is as complicated or as simple as you make it; complicated enhancements and Jutsus will be necessary later in the game, but for now, just get used to the system.
