The Description:
Kailey Richardson has lived her life normally, with normal friends, normal grades, and a normal life. When a new girl, Daffodil Hayes comes to her school, things get turned upside down. Will Kailey make it through 7th grade?
Chapter 1
The sound of the alarm was both torturous and exciting. Kailey opened her eyes to a new day, her first day of middle school. Her first day of 7th grade. Her new outfit, completely Aeropostale, was laid out on her chair in front of her desk. Her friend Jodie had insisted that the pale pink shirt would "brighten" Kailey's chocolate brown eyes.
She dressed quickly, not wanting to waste time. Everyone in her house was fast asleep. She started school an hour earlier than everyone else, which meant avoiding her younger two twin sisters. She loved them to death but more often than not they were horribly annoying.
She went downstairs and decided on her breakfast, a granola bar and a Granny Smith apple. She ate the apple and put the granola bar in her pocket to eat along the way. Brush teeth, brush hair, get out.
The morning air was brisk and cold, Kailey wished she had brought a sweater, but it was too late now. She was already walking towards the middle school. She could walk to school now, the middle school was much closer to her house. Kailey was brimming with excitement, even though she had to walk to school alone today. Jodie's mother was a stay-at-home mom who loved taking her daughter to school in their Toyota Highlander. Kailey was at Jodie's house yesterday, and Jodie's mom was talking about how exciting middle school was while she shelved groceries.
"Hey, do you go to that middle school down the street too?" asked a voice, dilluted with a British accent.
Kailey stopped and turned around. Then she stared. There was a girl, her age most likely, walking toward her. This girl had blonde hair, it looked almost bleached. She had sweet blue eyes, and a fairly tanned skin tone. She was dressed practically like a hippie. Were those, radish earrings? "Uh...yeah." Kailey finally answered.
"That's good." the hippie girl answered. She stopped, feet away from Kailey. She noticed Kailey's stare. "What?" she asked.
"I uhm, like your earrings." Kailey stammered.
"Thanks. I made them myself." the girl replied. "I'm Daffodil."
Daffodil?! What kind of name is Daffodil?! Kailey thought. "My name's Kailey." Kailey said in monotone.
"That's a nice name. Do you want to walk to school with me? It's my first day. I'm from Hampshire." Daffodil said. "England." she added.
Like I couldn't tell with that accent. Kailey thought rudely. "How do you like America so far?" she asked as she started walking again, Daffodil by her side.
"It's good. A lot like England. No tea time though, Mum's been having it on schedule though, your time zone. She's been calling her friends up at all hours, just so she can find a convenient time for them. The time difference has really got her scrambled." Daffodil explained.
"Why did you move to America?" Kailey asked politely.
"Dad's company moved to the U.S. for more business, to spread out really. It's supposed to be a big success here, that's what they predicted. I'm not sure, it might be a lot of rubbish though. No offense, I just didn't want to leave." Daffodil said.
"What's with the outfit?" as soon as it was out of her mouth, Kailey realized how rude that sounded. "I mean, why do you dress like that?"
"It's for the environment really." Daffodil tugged at her skirt. "This was made of my mum's old curtains. Some people think it's odd, but really saving the world isn't that odd."
"You sound like a superhero." Kailey joked.
Daffodil smiled. "I was going to run for Parliament, but it doesn't look like that's happening now does it? I was thinking of moving back someday. What do you have for government here?"
"Senate." Kailey said lamely. "And the President, of course."
"Right, him." Daffodil wrinkled her nose. "The Prime Minister does mention him from time to time. There's the middle school."
The school loomed above them. Kailey felt smaller and smaller by the minute. Just then, Jodie ran toward her. "Kay, you wore the shirt!" she gave Kailey a huge hug. "There's rumors running around the school some hippie girl from Britain is-" she stopped when she saw Daffodil. "Oh, hi. I'm Jodie. And you are. . ."
"Daffodil." Daffodil answered immediately.
"Right." There was a moment of uncomfortable silence. "Welcome to our neighborhood. . .was Kailey helping you find your way to the school?"
"Yes." Daffodil said. "She was very helpful. Well, I'm going to go to the office to pick up my schedule. See you guys later." Daffodil walked away.
"What a weirdo." Jodie said when Daffodil was out of earshot. "She's just like, 'oh...I'm from Great Britain...'"
"She didn't say anything like that." Kailey said.
"Whatever." Jodie replied. "Lets go, we need to get to our. . ." Jodie squealed. "Lockers!"
Jodie sped ahead of Kailey, turned around, then made a gesture for Kailey to follow. Kailey quickly ran after into the school.
