You can't stop people from reading books just because of their religion. And it doesn't necessarily mean that they are bad either. Like I said, books are meant to open your eyes. You need to be exposed to opposite opinions in order to understand other people's cultures in different parts of the world. The world is a very diverse place and some, no, A LOT of people aren't going to share your beliefs. You do not shun their beliefs and call them stupid or not to listen to them, instead, you accept them for who they are.

I should definitely get to reading these "Golden Compass" books while I wait for someone to return "Eclipse" to the library. Which could take awhile. Hey, I got all of February vacation.

I went to the library today to see if they had it. . .they had three copies and they were all checked out. Darn. So yeah, I'll have to wait awhile before I actually get to read it.

I saw a copy at the bookstore, but I'd rather have *recycled* books, you know? Anyway, the font seems pretty small, and it was in the Teen section. Hmm. So it doesn't really seem like a kids book, probably for people age 12+.

I decited to look into this because it caused quite a stir. I got this off the authors website these are his exact words on this subject . For those who don't know The Golden Compass is part of a series called His Dark Materials. And from what I have read off of his site he doesn't seem to hate God. In fact he never says that God doesn't exist.

His Dark Materials seems to be against organised religion. Do you believe in God?

"I don't know whether there's a God or not. Nobody does, no matter what they say. I think it's perfectly possible to explain how the universe came about without bringing God into it, but I don't know everything, and there may well be a God somewhere, hiding away."

I agree, I read Harry Potter books and other books like Ella Enchanted and I'm a Christian. My dad is too and is big about it, but he doesn't care that I read them, although my homeschool thing would probably have a hissy fit if they found out that I was reading them.

I took a break from this series for a while and read some other books.... But a started to read The Amber Spyglass (The third in the series) and it was so far the best of the books! I am looking forward to the movie even though they are never as good as the books....

He can't kill God if he doesn't believe in him. That's like saying your going to kill a ghost that you don't believe is there. So I don't think he would say that it goes against his religon. And he can't hate someone who he doesn't think is real. But I hope the quotes I provided will help convince some people who are against the book to give it a chance.
