Chapter 3
The days slipped, gracefully, into a routine. Everyday Daffodil would sit with them at lunch, Jodie would scowl at her lunch, and Kailey would try to be the peacemaker. Kailey supposed that three was company, the saying was right. Jodie, who used to make an effort to be somewhat nice to Daffodil, or at least decently nice, was now getting colder, as the days seemed to be.
Study Hall was one of the classes that all three girls had together.
"Kay, can you help me?" Jodie asked, gazing at her Math homework with distaste.
"You multiply that number," Kailey pointed at a spot on Jodie's paper. "by 7."
"Then what?" Jodie moaned.
"There's nothing else. That's the answer." Daffodil added, looking up from her Science notes.
"I was asking Kailey." Jodie snapped. Daffodil recoiled.
"That was mean." Kailey said.
"Well she interrupted my train of thought!" Jodie replied, rudely.
"It was what I was going to say!" Kailey yelled. The Study Hall teacher gave them a Look. "It was what I was going to say." Kailey said, lowering her voice down to a whisper.
"Yes, well she has that nasally little British accent." Jodie retorted, forgetting, or maybe not forgetting, that Daffodil was right there.
Kailey looked over at Daffodil. The bell rang and Daffodil was the first one out the door. Kailey ran after her, but Jodie called out.
"Kay, what the heck?" Jodie said amongst a sea of people.
"She's my friend too." Kailey replied.
"But I'm your
best friend!" Jodie protested.
Kailey turned and quickly walked away, leaving Jodie standing there, mouth agape, not sure what else to say.
Kailey weaved through the crowd. She found Daffodil at her locker, shelving books.
"Hey." Kailey said.
"I knew she hated me." Daffodil mused.
"Jodie is just. . ." Kailey explained.
"Difficult, I know." Daffodil said, her anger suppressing her British accent.
"It's alright." Kailey comforted.
"No it's not. I mean, Jodie really just doesn't like me. And it's totally fine, I know that you guys have been best friends since the beginning of time and all. . ."
Since the beginning of time. Kailey thought.
I guess that would be true. Jodie and I go way back. . .but. . .she's changed.
"Well, I got to get to my next class." said Daffodil.
"I'm in your next class." Kailey reminded her.
"Right." Daffodil gave her a weak smile. They walked together to their next class.
