Chapter 2

After all the morning classes, Kailey was relieved to get to Lunch. Daffodil was in all of her classes. Even Advanced Math. Jodie wasn't in Advanced Math, because, in Jodie's words, "Math is. . .not fun.". Kailey showed Daffodil to all her classes. The teachers all adored Daffodil's British accent, although Daffodil said, "It will fade eventually, my mum told me."

Lunch came, and Daffodil was still in the Lunch line when Kailey sat down next to Jodie.

"So, you've been hanging out with the. . .Great Britain Girl?" Jodie spat out out the word along with a few chewed up pieces of pasta with meat sauce.

"She's not that bad." Kailey said, stirring around her own serving of pasta.

"She's. . .she's. . .I don't know." Jodie said. "I mean, she's just so. . .she doesn't belong here. She's belongs back in. . .Hampshire."

"What do you have against her?" Kailey looked her friend in the eye.

"Jeez, you're telling me you like that. . .European Environmentalist?" Jodie questioned.

"You say that like it's a bad thing." Kailey replied simply.

"Whatever. Lets just drop it. We're supposed to be best friends Kay. Anyway, she's coming. And of course, she's sitting with us. Perfect." Jodie smiled to Daffodil, sickly sweet, like maple syrup on sugar.

Daffodil met Jodie's gaze, and either chose to ignore it or just didn't know it was fake. She sat down with her salad and low-fat milk.

"Are you on a diet?" Jodie asked, eying Daffodil's lunch.

"I'm a vegetarian." Daffodil explained patiently, as if Jodie were a small child.

"Like I wouldn't have gues- Ouch!" Jodie cried out when Kailey kicked her from under the table.

"What was that?" Daffodil asked.

"Something that really hurt. These tables." Jodie explained bitterly.

"Alright then. . ." Daffodil started eating her salad.

Soon, and after uncomfortable silence at their table, the bell rang and everyone rushed out of the lunch room and to their next class.

The first day of school was over. Kailey walked out, in the middle of Jodie and Daffodil. Jodie ran off to meet her mother's Highlander in the parking lot and Kailey was left with Daffodil.

"Your friend Jodie doesn't like me very much." Daffodil said after awhile.

"Jodie can be a bit difficult sometimes." Kailey explained.

"I don't think she wants me as a friend." Daffodil said.

"She'll warm up to it." Kailey said hopefully.

"Maybe. Maybe not." Daffodil said. "Back in Hampshire one of my friends abandoned me because I became a vegetarian. She said it was too adult and she thought it was rubbish. She was one of my best friends too, so it really hurt."

"Wow." was all Kailey could think to say.

"It's alright now I suppose." Daffodil said. "I mean, life's like rivers. You get people going down all these different ones. Some are strong currents, some meander in different directions, some just go where others have already eroded. They all end up in the same ocean."

Kailey thought about this. She supposed it made sense. This girl had more sense than it looked like she did.

"Well, I have to go back to my house. See you tomorrow Kailey." Daffodil left. Kailey was still thinking about what Daffodil said. She headed back in her house.
