Okay. I found a LOT of typos in my first edition of Chapter One, so I re-did it. Made it longer.. shtuff like that. Mmmkay, so here it goes.
Chapter One
Encounter
Nikka walked into the school wistfully, wishing to be somewhere else, anywhere else. But of course, she was still in school. "Nikka!!" someone nearby called. She groaned, already sure who it was. "Hello Claire.." she mumbled, trying to walk faster. "Hey! Wait Up Nick!" she yelled again. Nikka winced. She had used her most hated nickname. She sighed, and stopped before she was embarrassed further.
"Nicky, what're you doing tomorrow? Mark wanted me to ask," Claire said with a smirk. "I'm.... cleaning.. my.. dad's car!" she lied quickly. Claire smiled apologetically. "I'll tell him that," she said with a small laugh. Nikka nodded, thankful. Claire bounced away, always too happy. "Aww, why the long face Niks?" a voice asked from behind her. Nikka jumped, and whirled around, hitting whoever it was in the nose.
++++++++
"I'm so sorry Jake!" Nikka mumbled, for the hundredth time. "I already said I forgive you Nicky.." he replied in a nasally voice. She held back a laugh. "What're you doing here? I thought you moved to Ohio!" she said excitedly. Jake and Nikka had been childhood friends, until he moved away. "My Dad got relocated. It was near here, so we moved," he replied, again in that weird voice. "Well, I'm glad you did," Nikka said, throwing her arms around his neck.
"So, what're you're classes?" she asked after a moment of silence. "Uhm, here, just look at this," he said, taking out a sheet of paper. Nikka compared the classes in her head. "Hey! We only have two classes apart!" she said, excited for once. Jake smiled, "I'm glad for that, but you need to get going. They'll be mad at you for being late the first day!" he said with a laugh. "Oh! Thanks Jake!" Nikka exclaimed, bounding out of the room with a wave.
++++++++
12:15. Lunch already? Nikka sighed. She'd already missed half of the day, so what good was it? Should she ditch now? Nah. She'd get in trouble for it at some point. So, Nikka stalked into the cafeteria. Mumbling pointless words under her breath, she found an empty table. Nikka was already the outcast, so what good was any of it going to do? Quietly, she pulled a sack lunch out of her backpack, and dug in. But, stopped suddenly. A chill crept up her back. "Mind if I join you?" a satin voice asked. She jumped, wheeled around, and held a gasp back.
His hair was black, and he had brilliant blue eyes that stood out. He was smiling brilliantly. She choked. His eyes widened slightly, but he calmed after she had taken a drink, and stopped gagging. Nikka flushed and shook her head. He smiled brilliantly, and sat down across from her. "Sorry about that.." she gasped, taking another swig of her Coke. "S'okay. What's you're name?" he asked. "Nikka Valor," she replied automatically, surprising herself. He chuckled. "Blaik Lockwell," he said with another brilliant smile. Nikka swooned, and almost fell off of her chair. Blaik's hand shot out, and caught her elbow. A freezing shock passed through his hand, and onto her arm. Nikka pulled back, but he was quicker.
"I'm sorry..." he murmured quietly. Nikka's eyes were still wide, but she managed to nod. "Are you well?" he asked, studying her pale face. She quickly shook the surprise off, and nodded. "I'm fine," she said warmly. Blaik smiled once more. Nikka flushed. He mumbled something under his breath, too quick for her to hear, but she caught her name. "What was that?" she asked. He glanced up quickly. "Nothing," he said quickly. Blaik froze then, his eyes drifting to something Nikka couldn't see. "I should go," he said with an amused smile on his face. "Wha?" Nikka asked, but he was gone.
She sighed, and glanced down at her sandwich, suddenly not very hungry. “Nikka!” Jake yelled from across the room. She rose a hand and waved shortly. He smiled softly, and jogged to her table. His nose ended up fractured, but he refused to go to the hospital. Apparently, he wanted to stay with her on the first day. “Sweet.. Really sweet…”Nikka thought with a smile.
“So, Jake, how’s the nose?” she asked guiltily. Jake smiled understandingly, “It’s fine Niks, stop worrying.” Nikka was not so easily convinced, but she dropped it there. “Hey…” he said. “Uh, hey Jake?” Nikka replied. “No no..” he said, obviously frustrated. She raised an eyebrow. “What is it Jake?” she asked. “There’s a big dance coming up.. And I was wondering…” he started. “..What?” she asked quickly. He sighed. “If you.. Were.. Going.. With anyone..”
Nikka pondered for a minute. She’d had three offers today, but she turned each down. “Nope, not yet, why do you ask?” she said, sipping her soda. “Well, I was wondering if you wanted to go with me,” he said, averting his eyes. Nikka laughed, “Sure, I’ll go with you Jakey-poo” she said teasingly. Jake smiled, content now.
++++++++
“And so… Columbus was not, in fact, the one who found America…” Mr. Huntington went on, in his dreary, dry voice. Nikka wished very much that Jake was in this class. At least then, it would make it a little more tolerable. Instead, Blaik Lockwell was there, sitting next to her, making it hard to concentrate.
“Alright, partner up..” Mr. Huntington went on, “It would help if it was someone you knew..” Nikka almost snorted. “I don’t know anyone..” she murmured, sure nobody could hear. But Blaik smirked, she was sure of it. “How did he hear that?” she wondered in awe.
“Nikka? Would you be my partner?” Blaik asked formally. “S-sure..” Nikka stuttered, making him chuckle. She sighed, and opened her book, happy nobody had noticed it was closed the entire time. He smirked, “Shall I do the work for you?” he asked. “No, I think I’m very capable to help,” Nikka spat, offended. He held up his hands in defeat, “I’m sorry,” he said quickly, offering a smile.
“Fine..” Nikka said, giving in. Blaik smiled wider, in victory. “First question,” he said, filing through the papers on the shared desk. “Ah, here it is, ‘Name three explorers’,” he announced. “Easy, Columbus, Cabrillo, and Cortez,” she stated simply, writing the names down on her own paper. He had them down by the time she looked up. “Next question..”
++++++++
“Okay class, hand in you’re papers now please,” Mr. Huntington called in a bored tone. Nikka sighed, and began to get up. But, she was stopped by a sudden pressure on her shoulder. Blaik’s hand had pulled her back into her seat. “I’ll take them,” he said politely. Her head tilted to one side as he took the paper from her hand. With a chuckle, he rose fluidly, and lithely walked to the front of the room. Like.. A cat?
She quickly shook it off, and took out one of her favorite books. Blaik was back in his seat before she realized it, and was leaning over her shoulder, probably reading. Nikka instantly tensed though. The scent of him was enough to drive her insane, but she had to keep composure. So, she kept on 'reading'.
Chapter Two
The Dance
Nikka sighed. "Today is the dance, aren't you excited?" Claire asked, trotting along at her side. "Oh, I'm excited all right.." she grumbled. Jake was nice.. but.. Blaik had asked her to go as well.. and she had answered yes. "You idiot.." she thought glumly. Claire's eyebrows came together. "What's wrong Nikky?" she asked, genuinely concerned for once. "It's just.. You wouldn't understand.." she reaplied, breaking away from her friend.
She was not a cheater by trade, but Nikka couldn't help it. Blaik was so.. perfect. And Jake.. was as well. "What is wrong with me..?" she asked herself, out loud. "There is absolutely nothing wrong with you," a voice assured her. "Ah.. but there i-" Nikka began, turning around. "Gah! Blaik!" she exclaimed, almost falling. But Blaik's reflexes defied gravity. She was back on her feet before she knew what had happened. "What's wrong?" he asked.
"Well.." Nikka said, rather quietly, "I.. think.. I'm falling for you Blaik.." His reaction wasn't what she expected at all. Nikka had been looking at the floor since she admitted that, so she couldn't see his expression. "Well, I'm here to catch you.." he said, his voice was like silk. She flushed, and swayed a bit. Blaik caught her by the shoulder, and pulled her to him. "We'll have to work around that.. won't we?" he said with a laugh. With that, he brushed his lips across her forhead, and departed.
Nikka stood dazed, for who knows how long. That is, until the late bell jolted her from her trance. "I'm late.." she groaned, as she began to walk to her third class. "Nikka!" someone called from down the hall. "Oh no.. Jake!" she exclaimed quietly. So, she ran. Ran past her classroom, through the school's double doors, and sprinted into a secluded allyway. Sneakily, she peered out, looking for any sign of life. "Phew.." she murmered, and turned around. "HOLY CROW!!!" she yelled, and jumped back. Blaik smiled. "Hello to you too," he said with a smirk.
"God.. you scared me.." Nikka said quickly, trying to breathe correctly. "Are you okay?" he asked, worried. "I'm fine.. give me a minute.." she replied. Blaik smiled apologetically. "What are you doing out here?" he asked. "I'm running from my best friend, Jake.." she said, as soon as she had the breath to. He nodded, "May I ask, why?" She sighed. It would have to come out some time.. wouldn't it? "Well.. he asked me to the dance before you.. and I said yes.. but now, I really want t-" she started, but Blaik pressed his index finger to her lips, silencing her.
"So.. you were supposed to go with him?" he asked. "Uh oh.. he sounds angry.." Nikka thought, pained. "Well, yes, but no-" she said, and was cut off again. He looked frusterated.. sad.. angry.. and hurt. "Then go with him," Blaik said simply. "But I don't
want
to go with him. I want to go with you!" Nikka explained. He snorted, "No, you really don't.." Nikka's eyes narrowed. "Yes, I do," she growled defiantly. He sighed, obviously exhasperated.
"I won't even be there, I have to.. eat dinner with the family," Blaik said. "Fine. I hope you like you're dinner," Nikka retorted, hurt. She began to walk away, but he caught her wrist. Before she realized what was happening, he pulled her back into the ally, and kissed her on the cheek. "Nobody said I didn't
want
to go with you.." he murmered, "You said yes to Jacob first.. so you're going with him.." Nikka blinked twice, still in shock from the kiss. "O-okay.." she said shakily. Blaik smiled, pecked her on the nose, and dissapeared.
++++++++
Nikka sat in her bedroom, defeated and alone for the moment. So.. he liked her.. but he wanted her to go to the dance with Jake.. it made no sense. Why did he always have to be so.. so... so proper! It wasn't fair. But, she sighed, and got up. The dance would begin in two hours, and Jake was taking her to dinner in 30 minutes. She had to get ready. Her dress was laid out on the bed, black and sleek. It tied around the neck and trailed to the floor. Her hair was a mess, and she still had to do her make-up. "Gah.." she mumbled, as she began.
Within fifteen minutes, she had finished. The dress fit perfectly over her slim frame, and her hair was pinned up in a formal arrangement. Her mother had fussed over it for most of the time. The dress wasn't a problem at all. And by the time she had finished, Jake had already pulled into the driveway. He was dressed accordingly, a black suit with a tie, and for once, his hair was actually combed. She had to admit, he could look good when he wanted to. "Wow Nikka, I never thought I'd see you in a dress!" Jake exclaimed, too enthusiastic. "And I never thought I'd see you in a Tux, now let's go before my parents make us stop for pictures," she replied, keeping her voice low for the last part. He smiled down at her and nodded.
++++++++
"Geez! When you said we were going to eat, I thought you meant the diner Jake!!" Nikka half shrieked as he pulled up in front of the fanciest resturaunt in town. "Well, I thought it should be special. So kill me," he said with a smirk, as he got out. She reached for the car door, but seeing Jake almost trip over his own feet to get there, she sat still. He composed himself before opening the door, fixing his tie, smoothing out the pants. It almost made Nikka laugh. Almost.
Apparently, Jake had made reservations two days before he asked her to the dance. "A little ahead of yourself.. don't you think?" she said under her breath after the waitress had gone to get they're drinks. "I hoped you would have said yes.. besides, my parents could have used the reservations anyway," he replied, eyeing a waitress as she walked by. Nikka raised an eyebrow. "Have you met Claire yet?" she asked, trying to start some kind of conversation. "Yes, I met her after school one day," he said, tilting his head to one side.
"Hmm, so did she say anything?" Nikka asked. "She sorta squealed, and took off.." Jake replied, laughter on the edge of his voice. "Ah.." she murmered. "I'll have to ask her about that.." she thought, nodding at the waitress as she brought the sodas they ordered. "Nikka.. can I ask you something?" Jake said, hiding under his bangs. "Sure," she replied. "Do you like me.. as more than.. just a friend?" he asked, blushing deeply. Nikka was taken off gaurd. "Well.. I don't know Jake.. I love you.." she started. Jake looked up hopefully. "As a brother, Jake, not as a boyfriend.." she added quickly. He looked shot down.
"I don't know Jake! I'm really confused right now.." Nikka murmered. And she really was confused! On one hand, Blaik was polite.. had a great personality.. and had made his moves with no embarrasment what so ever. On the other, Jake was her best friend, she had known him since she was a child, and was an all around good guy. What was she to do...
I may have to continue Chapter Two onto another post. But whatever.
Awww.. I'm putting a poll up ^^
