Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted – More Than Just a Circus

Rrrrraaaa da dada dada dat dat
Dat dat dada dada dat dat Afro.
Afro Circus
Polka dot polka dot.
Afro Circus.

You will be singing that for days after seeing the third installment of the Madagascar movies, Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted, opening in theaters today.

But don’t let that discourage you from seeing this movie.

Everyone came out of the screening singing that song and hailing this as the best in the series.

I loved the first Madagascar as the animals who knew of nothing outside of a pampered life in New York City’s Central Zoo, try to sneak around New York and escape to Africa.

I don’t remember much of the second Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa, other than they escape from Madagascar and end up in Africa.

Europe’s Most Wanted picks up where the second one left off. Alex the lion (Ben Stiller) is unhappy on the plains of Africa and wants to return to his beloved home in New York. Friends Marty the zebra (Chris Rock), Melman the giraffe (David Schwimmer) and Gloria the hippo (Jada Pinkett Smith) try to cheer Alex up on his birthday. They hatch a plan to find the penguins and monkeys in Monte Carlo and get back to New York.

Of course none of the plans go as expected and they crash land in France, picking up an evil animal control officer, Captain Chantel DuBois (Frances McDormand). DuBois is no average officer… part animal, part unstoppable tracker…she hunts and collects all types of animals to mount on her wall.

The one animal missing? The African lion.

DuBois will stop at nothing to catch and mount the head of Alex on her wall.

To escape from DuBois and get back to the states, the four friends and their penguin pals join a circus so they can travel across Europe incognito.

Circus. Afro. Polka Dot. Polka Dot. Afro. Circus.

This movie is perfect for the 4 to 13 range as it has something for everyone. I brought my 7 and 10 year olds along who described it as “a lot of fun.”

They do want to warn that there are a few sad moments in the movie, but really they are tiny and resolved quickly. DuBois is a tad unsettling and almost annoying as she is hot on their scent trail.

If you are looking for a fun movie for the whole family, do not miss Madagascar 3. Your kids will love it and so will you.
