New and Up Coming Games: ModNation Racers

It’s a pretty hectic time for gaming at the moment, with  E3 underway and Super Mario Galaxy 2, said to be one of the greatest games on the Wii hitting the shelves. Needless to say, I was spoiled for choice. In this post, however, I want to focus on ModNation Racers for the PS3.

ModNation Racers is the second game in the ‘Play, Create, Share’ genre for the PS3 (the first being Little Big Planet). It hit the shelves on the 21st of May in Europe and on the 25th of May in the USA. It is a kart racing game where you can create your own characters, karts and race-tracks and race against other players using Playstation Network.

In the campaign mode, you play as Tag, a rookie racer who rises through the ranks of the MRC (Modnation Racing Championships). You can either play as the original Tag character, or one of your very own creations. The campaign also has two very funny commentators; Gary, on the end of many jokes, and Biff, constantly mocking Gary. The online modes are a lot of fun. Showing off your crazy creations and hitting people with the lightning bolt never gets old!

Creating plays a big part in ModNation Racers, and it is quite easy. Creating characters is probably the most fun, where there are literally hundreds of mouths, eyes, noses, facial hair and clothing. With the sticker tool, you can create logos or simply put some crazy designs on your characters. Some incredible characters have been made, such as Iron man, Mario and Mr Monopoly, and you would be surprised how accurate they are. You can’t be as crazy when creating a kart, but it is still a lot of fun, and very similar to the character creation. The track creation is by far the most difficult, requiring you to place the road, props and landscape, but it is still very simple to do.

These features can be easily accessed through the Modspot, a sort of home world where players can ‘stunt it’ on the rotating ramp, chat using instant messaging and challenge one another.

The only problem that I can find with ModNation Racers are the load times. Every single load screen can last for a minute or even longer. This really does take away from the enjoyment of the game, though they are somewhat bearable.

I really enjoy this game and would recommend it to anyone who likes to be creative and anyone who likes to be competitive!

Don’t forget to check out my creations while your playing! My account is Sawsage01.
