Grey rep means that the person who gave it to you, at the time doesn't have any rep power at all. You need at least 50 posts and at least 10 rep points. If the person who gives you rep doesn't meet one or both of those requirements the rep thing will show up gray. This means it doesn't add or subtract anything.
